Kanyakumari Overview

Kanyakumari, the southernmost district of India. It is famous for sea shore, sunrise, vivekananda rock and heritage tourism. It is formerly called Cape Comorin. This place attracts lots of pilgrimage tourists every year. The district is surrounded by beautiful hills and the colourful sea shore makes this town popular among the tourists. The nearest airport is in Trivandrum, which is 100kms from Kanyakumari. Nearest railway station is in nagercoil and there are frequent rails to kanyakumari from cities like Trivandrum, Cochin, Chennai, Coimbatore and Mumbai. Direct buses to kanyakumari are available from most of the major cities in Tamilnadu.

There are many beautiful locations out there in kanyakumari to see and enjoy. Places like Vivekananda Rock, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Our Lady of Ransom Church, Padmanabhapuram Palace and Tsunami Monument are the important ones to see. Ferry Ride to Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Vivekananda Rock memorial is a popular monument and toursit attaction in Kanyakumari. It was built in the year 1970 and managed by Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee. This place is built in the memory of Swami Vivekananda. It is beleived that he swam to this rock and attained spiritual awakening here. The rock memorial consists of four parts namely front entrance, mukha mandapam, saha mandapam and dhyana mandapam.The ferry jounery to the rock in the sea is interesting. The rock is located 500 metres from the shore. THough it is a five minutes ride, sometimes you have to wait in a long que before you get a seat. The ferry service is managed by poompukar shipping corporation.

Bath in Thirparappu Falls

Thirparappu Falls, a man made small waterfalls. It is located 35 kms from the nagercoil town and 15 kms from pechiparai dam. It is a nice picnic spot with small park. The water falls is clean and safe. Bathing in the waterfalls is a nice experience. Small fee is collected for entry. There is a small swimming pool and a temple nearby.

Thiruvalluvar Statue

Thiruvalluvar, world renowned Tamil poet. His famous work Thirukural is most known tamil literature across the world. It was translated in to various languages. Thiruvalluvar is also called Theiva Pulavar, which means divine poet. To honour him; Indian government has erected a big statue near kanyakumari. The statue is 133 feet tall and made of stone. It is located in a small island near kanyakumari. The statue was opened in the year 2000. Tourist can travel to the statue in a small ferry.

Our Lady of Ransom Church

This Mother Mary church was built 100 years ago. The foundation of this church laid in the year 1900 and the Mr.Pakiam Pillai was the chief architect. The church is built in the style of ancient Gothic. The locals call the mother as Alangara Upakara Matha in tamil. It is belived that there are so many miracles happened during the construction of this church. A must see for christians and other visitors as well.

Gandhi Memorial Hall

A small temple building in the memory of great Mahatma Gandhi. This temple is built in the same place where gandhi's ashes kept for public view during 1948. This temple is built in the year 1956. This building is maintained by Government of Tamilnadu. The temple building is open from 7am and closes 7pm for the visitors.

Kamaraj Memorial Hall

A memorial Building to honour the former chief minister of Tamilnadu Shri. Kamaraj. He was born in july 15 and popular political figure in India during the 1960s. He is also fondly called "king maker" for his influence in politics. The building also consists a small museum. The museum has pictures, books and news about the great man Kamaraj.

Udayagiri Fort

One of the ancient forts located in Kanyakumari. It is 14kms away from the district capital Nagercoil. One of the popular tourist attractions in Kanyakumari. This fort is believed to be built by Maharaja Marthanda Varma of 18th century. The fort is spread across 90 acres of ground. The fort consists of some ancient remains like cemeteries and small chapel. It is one of the historical attractions of Kanyakumari.This fort can be reached by buses and taxis from Nagercoil. Exact place the fort is located is called Thuckalay. Now the fort is managed by both the Archaeological and forest department of Tamilnadu. The fort is opened at 8am and closed at 8pm for the visitors.

Amusement Park

Looking for a day out with kids in Kanyakumari ? Baywatch watch water theme park is the best place to go. Its a beautiful amusement park in kanyakumari. Entry fees is less compare to other theme parks. It has numerous rides for kids. Rides like Giant Wheel, Milky Way, Bumping Car, Crazy Chairs and Multiple Splash are the attractive ones. Though the park is not big, its a good outing for kids. Apart from the water games, there is wax museum to see inside the park. Its really something a different kind of attraction in these region. Life size wax statues of international and national celebrities are on show. Overall a good place to hangout on a sunny day. Don't expect much, small park with limited options.
